WRCH blog by The English lady for the week of February 15th, 2010

Hello everyone, As you can see below I am doing an event on February 20th at the Acton Library, in Old Saybrook and would love to see you there.

As many of you know I am a firm believer in that wonderful natural bi-product Manure and wanted to give the recipe for Manure tea, which you can make now so that it will be really rich and potent for use with seed planting and the garden in April, so here goes:

Manure tea: Obtain a thirty gallon bin on wheels if possible, from the hardware store and fill it up to ¾ with water.  In a burlap sack or using a square of burlap, add three to four shovels of manure (always wear gloves, when working with manure, as it contains bacteria, good for the soil and plants, not good for your health). Tie the top of the sack or form the burlap into a sack, like a teabag.  Drop this into the water and every few days; swish the bag around in the water.  In a couple of weeks, this nourishing tea will have steeped and is now ready for any garden use.  At this time in February, for seed planting, soak the seeds overnight in the manure tea, allow them to drain on a paper towel the next day, before planting and when seeds germinate, use the tea to water them.  Throughout the growing season, this liquid gold is great as a quick boost for containers and for the vegetable garden as vegetables are heavy feeders.

Manure, Money and Mental Health – The Essentials of Life

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

All are invited to an exhilarating afternoon of humor and seriousness as three dynamic women speak about three completely different yet surprisingly interrelated — and vitally important — aspects of life.  The event will take place at the Acton Library on Saturday, February 20th, at 2:00PM.  The library is located at 60 Old Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, CT.  Please call 860-395-3184 for additional information.

Manure:

Maureen Haseley-Jones, aka The English Lady, is a much sought-after and highly respected lecturer, writer and radio gardening expert. In her talk entitled “Garden Earth”, she will speak to us about creating a beautiful organic garden without using the harmful chemicals that pollute the air, water, plants and indeed, our lives.  Healing our planet, one garden at a time.

Money:

Diana Melville, CLU, ChFC, veteran financial planner and investment advisor with the Barnum Financial Group, lectures on a regular basis throughout the state of Connecticut. She sits on several boards and is currently president of the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce.  Ms. Melville will speak on “The 10 Most Common Money Mistakes.”  This is must-hear information due to the very serious financial environment we are in today.

Mental Health:

Author and social advocate, Pamela S. K. Glasner will discuss her newly-published dark historical 350-year fictional yet factually-based journey through the history of treatment for the mentally ill and the intolerances of society for anything that is perceived as different, the disturbing contemporary trend of misdiagnosis and overmedication, spirituality and the ardent desire to lead a life that matters, and the indisputable human right of free will.
