One of the most meaningful radio events of my life, was the day 4 years ago when WRCH broadcast our first World Vision Community of Caring broadcast.  That day, people in this community sponsored 411 children from all across the globe from East Africa, to South America.  The girl I sponsor is from Chad.   Her name is Djaingue.  She  lives with her parents, 3 brothers, and sister. Her parents struggle to provide for the family. Her father is an agriculture worker and her mother takes care of the household. Despite their efforts, it is difficult to meet the family’s needs.

Her Family home is made of mud and sticks with thatch roofing. Their diet consists mainly of millet and sorghum made into cereal. Cassava is also a staple during times when food is scarce. The climate is tropical, with a dry season and a rainy season. The community is located on a wooded savanna and the terrain is very flat.

Djaingue is in primary school and she enjoys reciting poems and stories. She helps at home by babysitting. She likes to play with board games. She is in satisfactory health, but when I first sponsored her, her health was listed as only fair.  That is worth the dollar a day just to see her doing better.  I don’t miss the money.  World Vision sends 87 cents on the dollar to support children.  I support local charities too, but this is special to me because unlike in America, these children we help don’t live in an area where there is a church on every corner, a social system that provides soup kitchens or a government that will step in to help.  These children are truly on their own.

World Vision stepped into Djaingue’s community and provided and provides clean water and better access to medical services. The provide literacy programs for mothers and their children. Parents receive training to start small businesses and learn agricultural techniques.

Wednesday,  Lite 100.5 WRCH will have our second World Vision Community of Caring Broadcast.  We will suspend all commercials from 6am-7pm to devote our time to sponsoring more children.  You will hear from other people on the WRCH staff who are still sponsors and from some the people from the 411 who sponsored children the last time.  To learn more call 1-866-HOPE (4673) or Click the World Vision box below to learn if Sponsoring a child is right for you.  You can also see what www.charitynavigator.org says about World Vision by clicking he link.
