August 25, 2001 – American singer Aaliyah and several members of her record company were killed as their overloaded aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Marsh Harbour AirportBahamas.

Earlier in the month, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore had a Ten Commandments monument installed in the judiciary building, leading to a lawsuit to have it removed and his own removal from office.

It was also the month that the final episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood aired on PBS Kids.
