September 1, 1972 – Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky in a chess match in Reykjavík, Iceland, becoming the first American world chess champion.

A few days later, The Price Is Right debuted on CBS hosted by Bob Barker.

And eleven Israeli athletes at the Summer Olympics in Munich were murdered after 8 members of the Arab terrorist group Black September invaded the Olympic Village; 5 guerillas and 1 policeman were also killed in a failed hostage rescue.

And these were the top 5 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for September 2, 1972:

#4 – Looking Glass – Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)

#3 – Al Green – I’m Still In Love With You

#2 – The Hollies – Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)

#1 – Gilbert O’Sullivan – Alone Again (Naturally)
