Less than a week earlier, 60 Minutes made its debut on CBS. Nearly 50 years later, it remains on the air.

The Detroit Tigers won their first American League pennant in 23 years, and would go on to beat the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series 4-3.

And these were the top 5 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for the final week of September, 1968:

#5 – The Crazy World of Arthur Brown – Fire

#4 – Deep Purple – Hush

#3 – The Rascals – People Got To Be Free

#2 – Jeannie C. Riley – Harper Valley P.T.A.

#1 – The Beatles – Hey Jude
