2 University Students Test Positive for COVID-19 Over Move-In Weekend

August 17, 2020

Two students who moved onto the University of Connecticut’s campus over the weekend have tested positive for COVID-19, the school said Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, the university had tested a total of 1,386 students for the virus as they returned to campus as part of its check-in process, it said in a statement. Two of those 1,386 students tested positive, according to the statement.

“Given the volume of testing we are doing, it was inevitable that there would be positive cases,” UConn Dean of Students Eleanor Daughterty said in a statement. “Knowing this, the university has a clear and detailed strategy in place we can quickly implement to address any positives, and have already done so in these cases.”

The two students who tested positive have been moved into a “dedicated isolation space” on the university’s campus, she said. Their families and close contacts have also been notified.

The university will “conduct deep cleaning in the living spaces of any students who receive a positive test,” its statement added.
