Getting Inked To Stay Healthy

Here's an unusual way to ward off viruses; tattoos! Yes, that's tattoos, as in more than just one.

A study done last year at the University of Alabama, found that people with multiple tattoos are less likely to get sick than those with no ink. Having more than a single tattoo apparently boosts your immune system. But getting that first tattoo is likely to lower your defenses to illness.

It has to do with stressing your body. When you get that first tattoo, it weakens your immune system as your body attempts to ward off the invasion. However, the study found that additional tattoos actually improved a person's ability to fight diseases as they became accustomed to the stress of the needle at the ink itself.

Christopher Lynn, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Alabama who co-authored the study, compared it to working out at the gym. "Initially, muscles become sore, but if you continue, the soreness fades following subsequent workouts.” So the next time someone comments disapprovingly about your tats, just tell them you're doing your best to stay healthy.
